“WHOAAA!!!”

Just an inch higher and his head would have hit the glowing billboard.

“Of course I’m screaming! I’ve got myself a Pandora Mistress on my tail! Nobody told me- Left, leeeft!!!”

His ride obediently banked left, so hard that almost made him slip his phone.

“The rifle? Barely made a dent!!! How am I going to fight that- What? OH! Next time, please wait until I got killed before finally telling me how this toy works!”

Passing a clock tower, he made note of the time. “Alright, buddy,” he said while patting his ride, “We’ll need to play cat and mouse for about three minutes more. The new chemicals should’ve worked on her by then.”

A loud shriek from behind.

“See that bridge?” A growl answered him. “Let’s do your trick.” More growls, which sounded more like laughs. “Hey! I wasn’t ready that time!”

A steel bridge crossing a wide yet calm river, just ahead of them. He readied his black rifle.

“Let’s do this. For Dawn.”

~ 30 minutes earlier ~

“Yeah, that Dawn.” A curved stairway greeted him. “I’ve told you thousands times, but you seems to have a short-span attention problem. What? NO! She’s alive! And I’ll find- G-Good afternoon, sir.”

An old man just passed him down the stair with his curious stare.

“Can you stop asking questions?” he whispered. “I’m starting to look like a fool talking to the wall, thanks to your invisibility.”

Halfway to the next floor, he suddenly stopped. “What? What’s different?” About a minute he paused. “Can’t be. We’re supposed to be hunting regular Pandora...”

He proceeded upward, slower. Atop the second floor, again, he stopped.

“Greetings, sir. The lady is waiting inside.” A red haired maid politely gave him welcome, but he looked somewhat awkward seeing her.

“She’s not the one? Good. I’d hate to fight a cute maid like her.” He hushed once he passed the large ornate door.

“Ah, mister Dixon! Welcome!” said the middle-aged lady behind the desk. “Please, have a seat.”

Dixon took a seat, but on the long couch instead of the big chair that was offered. “Let’s just cut the pleasantries, Dana.”

The lady leaned back. “As you wish then. Despite the report, I am not detecting anything suspicious lately. Unless... your pet thinks of the opposite?”

“Dex is not a pet. And he’s already sniffing something.”

“Ah, has he found out that I am the Pandora Queen that kidnapped Dawn?”

“Let’s just get this over with, okay!?”

“You are still blaming me, after all...”

Dixon just sighed.

“Very well, I will grant permission-” An elegant melody interrupted her. “Ah,the big boss. Excuse me.” She picked up her phone and left for the balcony, while Dixon looked around the big room.

“Of course she’s not, Dana’s a Sentinel-” At once he turned around. “Where!?” He looked here and there, grabbing his rifle. “I can’t see it! Can you exactly-”

He found it. Right beside him. The red-haired maid.

“Ready?” she asked.
Entry for [Literature CVil War - June Prompt], 495 words.

The prompt is to write a short story (500 words) involving one character (Dixon in this story), one animal (Dex), and one object (the black rifle), with the character searching for something (Dawn). Wanted to have a sci-fi theme at first, but ended up with a more fantasy-ish setting... oh, well.

a small trivia: all the names are started with letter 'D' (including the title), just for fun.   : )
